Hiking and Trekking

Discovering nature, culture and tradition

Beautiful and varied trails for all needs can be found in our area. Comfortable walkers will get their money as well as demanding mountain freaks. In the valley easy, pleasant excursions are possible as the characteristic paths. At higher altitudes, well-marked paths can be found.

Hiking

From the Vilpian village centre you can walk just 10 minutes and reach the impressive 82m high Vilpian waterfall.
Within a few minutes’ walk you can also reach the Vilpian-Mölten cable car (Museumobil Card), which takes you to the picturesque Tschögglberg. This high plateau between Bolzano and Meran promises an enchanting experience for every hiker and nature lover.

Castle Neuhaus

A hike to the ruins of Maultasch Castle is a must for every hiker in the area and a destination that is also very suitable for families. The castle, built by the Counts of Tyrol, is now called “Maultasch” after the nearby customs post “mala tasca” (mousetrap). It is said that Neuhaus Castle was the favourite vacation getaway of the Countess of Tyrol “Margarete Maultasch”.

Stoanerne Mandln

Something more demanding from the point of view is a hike to the „Stoanernen Mandln“ (which in South Tyrolean dialect means as much as “stone males”). More than a hundred stone figures can be found at this legendary place – in their midst the summit cross of the Schöneck. What’s up with these mythical figures and how they came about is still puzzling.

Wine Route

A nice hike over the Terlano wine route leads you through the Terlano wine culture. Gourmets and asparagus fans enjoy the delicious dishes of the special asparagus weeks every spring. Accompanied by the Terlano Sauvignon, which is considered to be the ideal asparagus wine, the highest delights are to be expected.
